On Nov. 28, 2016, HFSP (Human Frontier Science Program) special lectures were given at Kanazawa University by Dr. Geoff Richards, Director of Research Grants, and Mr. Hideki Mizuma, Deputy Secretary General, the International HFSP Organization, on 'how to write a good HFSP grant application.' Also, Prof. Toshio Ando, Bio-AFM Frontier Research Center, Kanazawa University, gave a lecture on his experience on his HFSP research grant collaboration in the years 2011-3.

HFSP is a program to support fundamental research in the life sciences through international research grants and international post-doctoral fellowships. HFSP was first proposed by the then Prime Minister Nakasone at the Venice Summit in 1986, and started its undertakings in 1989 when the International HFSP Organization (HFSPO) was established and served by a Secretariat in Strasbourg, France.

In order to promote HFSP in Japan and to attract more applications from Japanese researchers, not only for the research grant but also post-doctoral fellowship program, Dr. Richards and Mr. Mizuma come to Japan each year to visit universities and research institutions. This year, these two key members of HFSPO came to Kanazawa University, besides several other prominent institutions, to give lectures on how to write good HFSP grant and fellowship applications. In addition, Prof. Toshio Ando gave a lecture on his successful experience of a HFSP grant awarded in the year 2011 for three years.

The audience of nearly 25 persons enjoyed the inspiring lectures and engaged in active discussion. It is hoped that the event will give rise to more applications for the HFSP research grant and fellowship programs from Kanazawa University.
